You have a background in music and theater …what style, conviction, or process would you say has remained unchanged in all your creative work?
I give myself over.
Peonies are one of my favorite flowers (obviously)….I read somewhere that you called peonies agreeable- I loved that. How would you describe some of your favorites?
My favorites usually render me speechless. I generally favor the seductive, alien or the ones that have something 'unreal' about them, and often possess a less obvious but still bold beauty.
If you were one of your own arrangements, what would you be composed of, and why?
Magnolia Grandiflora, a Lotus, Blue Poppies, Skeleton Flowers, and a Long-Stemmed Rose. They are atypical and so am I.
What is your favorite dish to eat in public?
Describe your perfect dinner party…
Quality company, quality ingredients, a comfortable setting, laughter throughout, and music- so that the dinner party becomes a dance party at some point.
What is your most gratifying ritual?
Dancing in my room.
Currently obsessed with?
Documentaries and birds.
What is the most loyal piece in your wardrobe, and what makes it special?
I have this Christian Dior blue and green plaid wool coat with a black velvet collar. I found it in a Salvation Army in Cambridge Square when I was in College for five dollars, which is special in it's own right. What really makes it special though is the nostalgic memories attached to it and that time period in my life, like a record collection- but also because it's one of the only things I've ever tried on that has fit like it was made for me. It felt lucky. I've had it about 9 years.
To me there is nothing more perfect than a simple white shirt and well fitting trousers done right. What is your floral equivalent?
A single stem of magnolia grandiflora.
Watching my city dog, Tennessee, play in the grass.
*See most gratifying ritual above*
Do you have something signature that identifies all your arrangements?
I'd like to think they all look like they could have been made by someone with a wand.
What is your first thought in the morning? Before you go to sleep?
My first thought of the day is a consideration of how much time I have before I have to be somewhere and then thinking about how am I going to spend that time. Before I go to sleep, I think about everything. It's my favorite time to think and dream- before I actually start dreaming.
Who (or what) is your Muse?
A confident and elegant woman with a bit of fire and edge. Some friends of mine, some strangers. I know when I see them- I become drawn to them. I find the magnetism is usually born when someone is unapologetically their self and not only comfortable in their own skin but wears it like a medal. Nature, too. I have many muses but mostly fierce women.
What do you wish you could say to every woman?
YAS KWEEN. I'm kidding. Everyone is charged by different things- so I would probably just smile and hand over a flower.
What is your Kalling?
To spread the magic.
